Ultra Strong Women

March is Women’s month. What better way to end the month by featuring strong women particularly in the local ultra scene? 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

Melanie Malihan.
Ohdz Arce.

When you’re a female ultramarathoner and you sign-up for one and see their names on the start up list, you’ll hear a tiny voice tell you, “Uwian na, bes. May nanalo na”. 😜

These two women often take the top female spots in current ultramarathons. I’ve been able to run with them in ultramarathons I joined before (well, not run as in side by side, as I’d usually be left waaay behind 🤣) and I simply admire these two.
Ohdz, for her competitiveness and the determination in her to finish what she started and Melanie, for her discipline in her training. Can you imagine doing 12 hour LSDs on a weekly basis to build endurance? 😣😣😣 It’s pretty obvious that their strength, endurance and stamina didn’t come instantly as they worked really hard to get to where they are now.

Here are the girls sharing a little bit more about themselves.

Give us a brief desciption about yourself.
I am Melanie Ansay Malihan, 33y/o, single, residing at Brgy. Dila, Bay, Laguna. Eldest in the brood of 3. Member of Running Team Calabarzon.
When did you get into running?
I started my running career at the age of 26, but before during my elem days I was a sprinter/short distance runner. In High school, I shifted to volleyball as vasity player.
What is your typical workout program if preparing for a race event?
My typical workout program is more on endurance/stamina training (95% ) running LSD for an average of 40 hours in 16 runs/month with speed training (5% ) for only once a week. My ultra training varies on multiple types of terrains, climatic condition, day & night running on various locations. I do sometimes run while raining.
Any special diet or rituals?
There is no special diet for me. What is more important is the immediate reflenishment of potassium and sodium usually lost during every hard earned training. I keep well hydrated all time even not in training. I limit the amount of oily and fatty foods in my diet, increase the amount of complex carbs and also balance my diet with protein rich foods. I usually eat more fruits and veggies with lots of fiber & drink 10-15 glasses of water everyday. Banana, a pinch of salt and pure water is my routine intake.
Most memorable race and why?
The Paa-Tibayan 24 Hour Endurance Run in Quezon Memorial Circle, Quezon City as back to back overall champion beating all the male competitors in consecutive year and the Crazy 24 Hour Endurance Run in Intramuros, Manila as female champion was my most memorable race ever.  I found it so hard from the preparation, training, diet, lack of funds, lack of running gears and gadgets, lack of food supplements only to endure & surpass everything.
What’s your secret in making it to podiums?
I don’t have any particular secret on my podium finishes except for doing and giving all the best I can every race. I dont waste my energy on the early going of the race. I usually use a “wait and see” tactic for every race, particularly for the ultramarathon. Halfway through, leading to the finish is the most crucial for energy reservation. Finishing strong is my main objective.
Tips/advice to those who want to be like you.
Every training and racing, I entrust myself to our God.  That’s my only ritual. To those who wish to be like me, they must value the importance of self discipline, hard work, dedication, determination, perseverance and utmost focus on training. Whatever achievement they got/made, always offer it to our God and give full thanks for all the blessings and guidance. Remain humble at all time.

So, girls! Ever dream of making it to podium?

It is possible, you know? All you need is the discipline to train hard like these girls and the determination to make your dream a reality.

If not, you can always join ultras where you’re sure the elites aren’t around or when there are only 2 other females running the same race. 😝
